my son went through the rigmarole of counselling for engineering. being ignorant in this field, i sought opinion from parents and students. i was amazed by the attitude that neither subject nor college mattered to most of them - all that seemed important was to get into a good business school in order to get a fat paycheque. if you do not love and respect your subject, how can you master it? we need to consciously instill the right values in our children, leading them by example. in this era of consumerism, we must teach them that all that glitters is not gold!

Hi Dolby, thanks for writing in. There is, as yet, no effect hatsover on my son.. but i am sure it will certainly work, slowly and surely.... he , like me, loves stories and books, and not just reads stories and forgets them, but relishes them , and remembers them.As you say, I dont remember all the stories I heard from my mother--there were loads and loads of them, but I do remember most of them... and they have been extremely useful for my son..... In any case, whether he remembers or not, I would prefer to be optimistic, and hope that the message does sink in some day..

"Shyam was a very good boy. He helped everyone, and troubled nobody. He became the ideal boy from then on, and everybody used to say, “Oh, what a nice boy that Shyam is” he was good not only at home, but at school too, he studied well, and grew up to be a very good young man. " haan haan.. so did ur son got the moral???... for me stories are told by my grand mom and by no chance i remember the story told and my life now, ended the same way :-)

Thanks for writing in, anargumentativeindian, but I would like to clarify that I am not generalising anything about your age group. I agree that many of you are very much aware of your duties and responsiblities. I am just pointing out that there are as many , if not more among the youth who are not.......

Maam Im from the very age group that you are referring to when you spoke about the compulsory rural posting thing...
Believe me our generation is much more concerned about our country. Not just me..But things are better than they used to be..From a parents perspective its a little hard to spot this trend...
